2018 National Plastic Surgery Statistics Reveals the Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures

A new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reveals the most popular cosmetic surgical and minimally invasive procedures and also the most popular total reconstructive procedures.

Top 5 total cosmetic procedures:

• Breast augmentation (313,735 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $3,824

• Liposuction (258,558 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $3,518

• Rhinoplasty (213,780 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $5,350

• Eyelid surgery (206,529 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $3,156

• Tummy Tuck (130,081 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $6,253

Top 5 total cosmetic minimally invasive procedures:

• Botulinum Toxin Type A - Number of anatomic sites injected - (7.4 million procedures): National average surgeon fee of $397

• Soft Tissue Fillers (2.6 million procedures): National average surgeon fee from $682 to $2,065 for different fillers

• Chemical Peel (1.3 million procedures): National average surgeon fee of $669

• Laser Hair Removal (1 million procedures): National average surgeon fee of $285

• Microdermabrasion (709,413 procedures): National average surgeon fee of $131

Total reconstructive procedures:

• Tumor Removal (4.4 million procedures) 

• Laceration Repair (253,447 procedures)

• Maxillofacial Surgery (204,521 procedures)

• Scar Revision (182,250 procedures)

• Hand Surgery (138,345 procedures)

The total amount of breast augmentation procedures increased 4 percent from 2017 and 48 percent from 2000. The total number of liposuction procedures is up 5 percent from 2017 and down 27 percent from 2000. The total amount of blepharoplasties is down 1 percent from 2017 and down 37 percent from 2000. The total value of neurotoxin injections, like Botox® and Dysport® increased 3 percent from 2017 and 845 percent from 2000. The total amount of soft tissue fillers increased 2 percent from 2017. The total number of chemical peels increased 1 percent from 2017 and 20 percent from 2000. Microdermabrasion procedures are down 4 percent from 2017 and down 18 percent from 2000.

Americans spent more than $16.5 billion on cosmetic plastic surgery and minimally invasive procedures in 2018, a four percent increase from the previous year.

The national average surgical fee for breast augmentation increased 2.8 percent from 2017. The cost for liposuction increased 4.2 percent and the cost for nose reshaping and tummy tuck increased 4.4 percent. The surgical fee for eyelid surgery increased 4.3 percent from last year. The cost for neurotoxin injections, like Botox® and Dysport®, increased by 3 percent from 2017, while the cost for laser hair removal decreased by 2.7 percent. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion fees decreased by 4 percent compared to last year.
